Finding Home is a project that was completed by 10th grade students at High Tech High North County primarily during the school closures that were a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This project asked students to explore the idea of home and the varied experiences people in our community have had with finding and creating a home. Students conducted interviews with a wide range of community members -- including immigrants, people experiencing homelessness, survivors of abuse, and people who have been involved with the foster care system -- and used those interviews as inspiration for original children's books. Students were tasked with taking complex stories about family trauma and systemic injustices and retelling them in a way that would educate, entertain, and inspire young children.
While much of the prep work was done before school shut down, the books themselves were completely written and illustrated from home during a period of "distance learning" in the spring of 2020.
